Vadakkal Ward has undertaken initiatives to achieve the status of a Fully Clean Ward. As part of the fourth phase of the Nirmala Bhavanam, Nirmala Nagaram 2.0 – Azhakode Alappuzha campaign, a Cleanliness Committee has been formed in the ward.
The meeting was chaired by Ward Councillor Mary Leena and inaugurated by Municipal Health Officer Vargheese K.P. Municipal Clerk Girish Anandan, Health Department officer Tenshi Sebastian, Can Alappuzha members Jesna and Jagannath, IRTC representatives Vishnu, Haritha Karma Sena members, Kudumbashree workers, cleanliness volunteers, and political party representatives also participated.
Key activities include implementing household-level waste management systems, strengthening the collection of non-biodegradable waste through Haritha Karma Sena, and fostering a culture of cleanliness where waste is not dumped in public spaces. The campaign aims to make all houses and areas in the municipality waste-free through active community participation.
Through the Biobin Challenge, all homes without waste management systems will be provided with biobins. Currently, non-biodegradable waste collection by Haritha Karma Sena in the ward is at 16%, which will be scaled up to 100%.
In the coming days, household visits, awareness classes, sanitation drives, and cleanliness rallies will be conducted to engage the community.
This initiative is supported by Living Lab Alleppey, ensuring citizen-driven, sustainable waste management practices.
