A delegation from Sri Lanka and Nepal visited Alappuzha to study the district’s solid and liquid waste management models. The visit was part of the TAG (Technology and Governance) Project, jointly organized by the Government of India along with the governments of Switzerland, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.
During the visit, the team observed the Decentralized Liquid Waste Management Plant (DEWATS) implemented at Chathannad through a collaboration between KILA and IIT Bombay, as well as the Material Collection Facility (MCF) operated by the Haritha Karma Sena.
The Kerala leg of the study tour was coordinated by the Center for Environment and Development (CED), Thiruvananthapuram. The Nepalese delegation included Sudarshan and Yash Karmacharya, along with a seven-member team, while the Sri Lankan delegation comprised Ruwanthi and Firna with their seven-member team. They were accompanied by CED representatives Dr. Babu Ambat, Baiju, and Jayanti.
In Alappuzha, the delegation was guided by Municipal Health Officer Varghese K.P., health department officials Sumesh Pavithran, Tenshi Sebastian, Girish A.S., and Raghu C.V., along with Rohit Joseph from CANALPY.
The exchange visit highlights Alappuzha’s role as a living model of decentralized waste management, with support from Living Lab Alleppey and CANALPY, showcasing scalable and community-driven solutions for sustainable urban management.
