Racing Towards a Cleaner Punnamada: Tackling Plastic Waste at the Nehru Trophy

Living Lab Alleppey stepped in to address the pollution of the water body, this time Punnamada Lake where Nehru Trophy Boat race is held annually.

Alappuzha Municipality follows a green protocol every year during the event. Accordingly the area from District Court bridge till Finishing point was declared as green zone.

The highlight of this year is the Brand Auditing that is being conducted on the waste generated during the event by focusing on plastic bottles. Here Brand auditing is an attempt to make brands responsible for the waste generated from their produce that finds its way into the lake.

A pre-cleaning was also organised two days before the event by mobilising students who cleaned the sides of the canal. Workers were hired to clean the stretch and collect plastic from the water. The students also volunteered to communicate the idea of green protocol during the event and to make use of the bins.

These kinds of exercises address the problem of waste generated through the practice of littering especially during such mass gatherings
