Alappuzha Urban Flood Study Conducted Through Boot Camp

Alappuzha Municipality’s critical urban flood challenges are being studied under the leadership of CANALPY Alappuzha. To understand how floods impact daily life, a three-day boot camp was jointly organized with M.Tech students from Barton Hill College, Thiruvananthapuram, focusing on the Alissery Ward.
Day 1 (29/11/2021): Sessions introduced CANALPY’s initiatives, Geotracker, ODK Collect, and mobile applications. In the afternoon, participants visited the DEWATS system at Chathanad Colony and conducted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) in Alissery Ward.

Day 2 (30/11/2021): Field visits were conducted in flood-affected areas of Alissery Ward, with mobile app-based data collection. The collected data was analyzed using GIS and Google Earth software.

Day 3 (01/12/2021): The team visited homes severely impacted by flooding to conduct interviews, gaining insights into the intensity of local flood issues.

The boot camp concluded on 02/12/2021 at 10 AM, with the students preparing a detailed study report and presentation to be submitted to CANALPY.
This initiative was conducted in collaboration with Living Lab Alleppey, integrating community-based flood mapping and data-driven analysis to strengthen urban resilience and planning.
