A one-week Mapathon has kicked off in Cherthala Municipality as part of a student internship initiative under the Vembanad Rejuvenation Project.
📅 Launched on June 9, 2025, the program brings together 29 students from CUCEK (Cochin University College of Engineering Kuttanadu) for an immersive field experience, organised by Living Lab Alleppey in collaboration with IIT Bombay.
🗺️ Students are mapping canal networks through on-site ground-truthing, using tools like QGIS and QField to collect and validate spatial data — a vital step for ensuring accuracy in rejuvenation planning.
🏞️ Hosted at Karmasadan, Alappuzha, the program began with ice-breaking, orientation sessions, and hands-on training, giving participants both the technical skills and contextual understanding to contribute meaningfully.
This initiative stands as a vibrant example of academia in action, where student energy meets community need — driving forward the shared goal of restoring the Vembanad ecosystem.
