Towards a Plastic-Free Vembanad: A Mega Cleanup Drive

Living Lab Team joined the mega campaign for plastic collection from Vembanad Lake. The campaign was held imagining a plastic free lake.

Organized by the District Collector and the District Panchayat, the campaign received funding confirmation from 12 Local Self-Government Departments (LSGDs) along the hashtag#Vembanad stretch- Alappuzha Municipality, Cherthala Municipality, and the panchayats of Kainakary, Aryad, Mannancherry, Muhamma, Thanneermukkom, Chennam Pallipuram, Thycattussery, Panavally, Perumbalam, and Arookutty.

Joined by P.P. Chithranjan, MLA of Alappuzha, the campaign included NSS and NCC volunteers from various colleges, volunteers from different organizations, members of the Houseboat Association, and the Fishermen’s Association. Simultaneously, all listed panchayats carried out the program with the support of college students, Haritha Karma Sena, the Houseboat Association, and the Fishermen’s Association.

Lake and the portion alongside the lake were cleaned during the campaign. Volunteers and members of the Fishermen’s and Houseboat Associations focused primarily on cleaning the lake, while other volunteers concentrated on cleaning the portion alongside the lake.
