As part of the Environment Week celebrations, the Alappuzha Municipality launched its environmental education program “My Earth, My Future” in schools. The city-level inauguration took place at Government Muhammadan’s Girls’ High School, where Ambalappuzha MLA H. Salam inaugurated the program.
The year-long campaign aims to instill environmental awareness in the current and future generations, ensuring sustainable livelihoods and equal access to a healthy environment. The program emphasizes making the environment the foundation of development.
Municipality Chairperson Soumya Raj presided over the event. HM Anim VO welcomed the gathering, and Education Standing Committee Chairperson R. Vineeth administered the sanitation pledge. CanAlapy coordinator Rohith Joseph conducted a special sanitation class for students.
Vice Chairman PSM Hussain, Standing Committee members Beena Ramesh and Bindu Thomas, and councillors Simi, MR Prem, B. Naseer, Prabha, Kavitha AS, Monish, Rakhi, Helen, Ramya Surjit, Rahiyanath, Jayamm, Suma, Claramm Peter, Naseer Punnakkal, Eldin Richard, Manish, HI Harshid, JHI Tenshi Sebastian, Senior Clerk Prince, and Gireesh Anandan participated in the program. Municipal Health Officer K.P. Varghese expressed gratitude.
Chairperson Soumya Raj also inaugurated a newly built aerobic unit at the school to ensure proper processing of organic waste. Across the municipality’s 42 schools, environmental education classes were conducted daily from 9:30 AM under the campaign. CanAlapy and IRTC coordinators, along with Science and Literature Council members and municipal officials, led the sessions.
The campaign will include practical classes on using aerobic units and bio-bins, hands-on learning of scientific processing of organic and inorganic waste, and educational field visits to Material Collection Facilities (MCFs) organized by Living Lab Alleppey and Haritha Karmma Sena.
