Towards Brown Gold – International Engagement in Alappuzha

As part of the “Towards Brown Gold” project, an international study team comprising 22 members from England, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, and Nepal visited Alappuzha to explore challenges and opportunities in Fecal Sludge Management (FSM).

The delegation, including research scholars, professionals, and NGO representatives, engaged with key stakeholders leading Alappuzha’s waste management initiatives – from Haritha Karma Sena and aerobic composting units to sanitation surveys and city-wide campaigns like Nirmala Bhavanam Nirmala Nagaram.

During the workshop, the CANALPY study report evaluating the city’s sanitation practices was officially released. The discussions focused on identifying gaps in FSM practices and shaping practical solutions for sustainable urban sanitation.

The event saw participation from municipal leaders, Haritha Kerala Mission, AMRUT, Pollution Control Board, Suchitwa Mission, IIT Bombay, CANALPY, and community representatives – reinforcing Alappuzha’s role as a living laboratory of urban environmental innovation.

Living Lab Alleppey partnered in facilitating this engagement, ensuring meaningful dialogues between global experts and local actors.
